RCIF Small-Cap Stock Pitch Guidelines


Idea Criteria:

  • The idea must be long-only.

  • The stock must be traded either on a Canadian or U.S. exchange.

  • The market capitalization of the selected company must not exceed 2 Billion USD.

  • Does not need to follow a specific format or number of slides, but the following section format would be encouraged:

    • Short-form Thesis

    • Business Model & Background

    • Industry and Competitor Analysis

    • In-depth Discussion of Moat(s)

    • Management

    • Valuation (with a legitimate margin of safety)

    • Catalyst

  • Teams will pitch a long value-based investment idea on a public company of their choosing based on the criteria below.

  • Teams will submit a slide presentation outlining the research they’ve done and their arguments for buying or holding.

  • Teams who make semi-finals will be contacted and will present their findings to a panel of judges on Feb 16th, 2021.

Team Size: Teams of 1 - 4 university students.

  • Email finalized slides to rational.capital@utoronto.ca by February 7th, 2021 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. The slides should be titled ‘TEAM NAME - RCIF Stock Pitch Competition’.

  • **Make sure the team leader submits the Google Forms registration AND emails the pitch slides.

  • Top 20 teams will be contacted via email by February 10th, 2021. Team leaders will be asked to confirm intent to participate in the semi-final pitch within 24 hours 

  • Further instructions regarding the event will be emailed to team leaders after confirmation is received. 

   3. Semi-final and Final Round

  • The top 20 teams will have the opportunity to give a 10-minute pitch on Feb. 16th, 2021 to judges. Of which 5 teams will be chosen to present in the final round, happening later on the same day. The top 3 best pitches will receive prize money.


  • Total prize money will amount to $1500 CAD

    • 1st Place - $1000 

    • 2nd Place - $300

    • 3rd Place - $200


PowerPoint Slides & Presentation: 

  • No slide limit.

  • Present your ideas clearly and concisely.

  • 10 minute presentation by team followed by a 10 minute question period from judges.
